Dionna Bright – Artist Statement

FALL RESIDENCY SHOWCASE 2024
Dionna Bright is a self-portrait artist who uses photography as her primary medium to explore the layered realms of memory, vulnerability, authenticity, and resilience. Across her practice, she reclaims personal history and reshapes the narrative of self, using materials— fabric, relics, knick knacks, wood, and vivid colors—as tools of transformation. Her self-portraits, whether created in the studio, at home or in nature, become meditative acts that reveal the complexity of human experience, inviting both tension and release.
In this residency, Bright experiments with cyanotype to create Initial Consultation, a series that layers counseling notes with images of delicate roses and deeply personal reflections. Through varied exposure times, each piece captures the evolving process of self-understanding, balancing the softness of petals against the vulnerability of open expression. Layers of Grace is a study in resilience and quiet beauty, capturing moments of stillness and strength that speak to the grace found in vulnerability. Meanwhile, Wild Woman channels an untamed, fierce energy, honoring the raw, unapologetic parts of self that resist containment. In these works, she explores what it means to confront, accept, and honor every part of one’s being across time and space.
