Ella Mackinson – Artist Statement

Ella Mackinson – Artist Statement

FALL RESIDENCY SHOWCASE 2024

Ella Mackinson is a visual artist working in oil paint and mixed media textiles. She received her BFA in Painting with a minor in the History of Art from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Her work explores time and its opposing relationship with nostalgia through familial relationships and stories.

Taking up quilting only two years ago, inspired by her paternal grandmother who was an avid quilter and all around creative individual, textiles naturally merged their way into her studio practice as a painter. This residency allowed for this exploration tocontinue, giving the artist a chance to work at a larger scale. At first glance, these pieces delight the viewer with color, composition, and aesthetic, entrapping the viewer in a time gone by, while depicting vintage and modern vignettes. A diary of intimate moments share the lives of three generations of women, which includes the artist, her mother, and maternal grandmother, memorializing the feminine experience, its heartbreak, and its joy.
