FALL RESIDENCY SHOWCASE 2023

Ju-Ian Shen came to North Carolina from her native country of Taiwan to attend College of Design, North Carolina State University, and received her MLA in Landscape Architecture.  Retired after 30+ years of fulfilling professional practices in that field in North Carolina and abroad, she has since been enjoying a simple life of learning and making art.

Clay is the main medium for her; one that she has passion for and with high competency. Through college courses/ workshops/ art studio classes she has also acquired skills in other disciplines, such as drawing, oil painting, fiber, and basic metalsmithing. Inspired by people, culture and happenings, in particular those that form an interesting narrative, she has, during this residency, embraced an open approach and incorporated various disciplines into her works.

She says late artist Jean Dubuffet said it the best about art: “…Art must make you laugh a little and make you a little afraid. Anything as long as it doesn’t bore…”. And she intends to do just that.
