Joy Davis – Artist Statement

Joy Davis – Artist Statement

FALL RESIDENCY SHOWCASE 2022

Joy Davis is a dance artist steeped in the practices of improvisation, Countertechnique®, and interdisciplinary collaborative performance. She holds an MFA from Smith College and is (hybrid/remote) Associate Professor & Dance Liaison with Career Services and Alumni Affairs at Boston Conservatory at Berklee.

Ontogeny of a Mother, becoming a vessel emerged from this residency through a practice of archiving my changing prenatal body. Approaching casting as meditation and the forms as choreographic objects, there is movement and stillness, familiarity and change embedded in each one. This work departs from other aspects of my creative process, such as foregrounding performance tone, text or movement invention, to prioritize the playfulness and complexity of these objects, movement within spatial design, and a view of my unprecedented experience of this time. Although a solo project, I must acknowledge the great assistance from Hannah Shaban, Stef & Steph Photography, and Eric Mullis. I am a deeply collaborative artist and greatly appreciate these artists working alongside me to create this work.”
